Support you may be entitled to in 2026

Updated on

Check what support you could be entitled to

A household of four with less than €45,474 of gross taxable income a year could be entitled to increased reimbursement from the health insurance fund (ziekenfonds / mutualité), known as BIM/VT status: the ceiling is €29,236.66, plus €5,412.51 for each additional household member, since 1 September 2026. Below other ceilings, family allowances increase (social supplement), and pupils and students can receive a study grant.

Enter your household and income: the tool flags the support you are likely to get, with the threshold, the source and the link to apply. It is never a guarantee: the paying body decides.

Increased reimbursement (BIM/VT status)

With this status, the health insurance fund reimburses more of your health care costs, and other benefits are linked to it. It is granted automatically with certain benefits (social integration income, GRAPA/IGO income guarantee for older people, disability allowances); otherwise, you apply to your health insurance fund, with a means test on household income.

Ceilings on household gross taxable income, per year, amounts indexed as of 1 September 2026. In principle, the previous year’s income counts; if you have been unemployed or unfit for work for 3 months, your current income.

Social supplements to family allowances

They come on top of basic family allowances when household income is modest. Each Region has its own ceilings and amounts; the family allowance fund usually grants them automatically, based on tax data from two years earlier.

Study grants

In the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, the study grant helps the families of secondary school pupils and higher education students; in higher education, it also waives the tuition fee (minerval). For 2026-2027, applications run from 1 July to 31 October 2026, based on 2024 income.

In Flanders, the schooltoeslag (secondary school grant) is paid with the Flemish Growth Package (Groeipakket), and the studietoelage (higher education grant) is applied for online; in the German-speaking Community, there is the Studienbeihilfe. Their ceilings could not be checked: the tool lists these grants without an opinion.

The social tariff for electricity and gas

It does not depend on income, but on a benefit: social integration income or equivalent support from the Public Centre for Social Welfare (CPAS/OCMW), GRAPA/IGO, disability allowances. Tenants of social housing with collective heating benefit from it for gas. It is applied automatically in most cases; FPS Economy (0800 120 33) can tell you whether it applies.

Often-forgotten tax reductions

Childcare expenses, service vouchers in Wallonia, pension savings, donations: they do not depend on an income ceiling, but you still have to declare them. Take stock with the year-end tax checklist, and estimate your result with tax refund or tax to pay.

Indicative information: each body applies its own rules (income year, household composition). A CPAS/OCMW, your health insurance fund, a trade union or a social service can help you apply.
