Wage indexation in January 2027: how much more net pay?

Updated on

Indexation radar: your sector, your net pay

As of 7 October 2026, the indexation for white-collar workers in joint committee 200 on 1 January 2027 is estimated at 4.32% (Acerta forecast of 29 September 2026; SD Worx announced 3.76% at the end of August). For a single white-collar worker on €3,000 gross, gross pay would rise to €3,129.60 and net pay from €2,261.33 to about €2,292.28: +€30.95 net a month, with the current scales.

The official percentage will be known at the end of December or early January, after Statbel (the Belgian statistical office) publishes the December index. Above €4,000 gross, part of the indexation is calculated ‘in cents’ (cents indexation). Other sectors index at their own pace: the radar below shows your joint committee’s mechanism and its effect on your net pay.

How much more net pay in January 2027? Examples for JC 200

Indexation raises your gross pay by the same percentage, but your net pay rises less: part of the increase goes on social security contributions and withholding tax (bedrijfsvoorheffing / précompte professionnel), and the work bonus decreases as pay rises. In the range where the work bonus decreases, between about 2,300 and €3,400 gross, the gap is widest: at €3,000 gross, a single white-collar worker keeps 24% of the gross increase; at €5,000, 44%.

Cents indexation above €4,000 gross

Since 1 June 2026 (Programme Act of 30 May 2026, published in the Belgian Official Gazette on 1 June), salaries above €4,000 gross a month for a full-time job are indexed ‘in cents’: the first 2 indexation points are calculated on €4,000 only, i.e. €80 at most; the rest of the indexation applies to the whole salary. The rule applies to the first 2% tranche granted in each sector from 1 June 2026, then again from 1 January 2028 (date still provisional). It covers both the private and public sectors; below €4,000, nothing changes.

How is the January indexation calculated for JC 200?

For white-collar workers in JC 200, the percentage compares the smoothed health index (the average of the last four health indices, multiplied by 0.98 since the 2015 index jump) for November and December of the past year with that for November and December of the year before. It applies on 1 January to pay scales and actual salaries.

Official example for January 2026: (133.07 + 133.33) ÷ (130.22 + 130.42) = +2.21%. For January 2027, the denominator is known: 98.16 + 98.35 (November and December 2025, base 2025 = 100, used by Statbel since January 2026). The last smoothed index published, for September 2026, is 101.20. The November and December 2026 indices will decide the result.

Each joint committee’s indexation mechanism

Each sector sets its rules in a collective labour agreement (CLA): some index on a fixed date (1 January, 1 July, every quarter), others by 2% each time the smoothed health index exceeds the pivot index. Indexation is compulsory: your employer cannot refuse it. You can check your sector’s minimum pay scale on the joint committees page.

Health index, smoothed index, pivot index: the latest figures

The health index is the consumer price index excluding tobacco, alcohol and motor fuel. It is used to index salaries, benefits and rents. The smoothed health index averages it over four months. When it exceeds the pivot index, social benefits, civil service salaries and pay in several sectors rise by 2%.

The last pivot index (100.28, base 2025) was exceeded in June 2026: civil service salaries rose by 2% in September 2026, with cents indexation. According to the Federal Planning Bureau (forecasts of 6 October 2026), the next one (102.29) would be exceeded in November 2026, then 104.34 in April 2027: benefits and public sector salaries would then rise in February and in July 2027. Over one year, prices rose by 4.69% in September 2026. The Planning Bureau forecasts inflation of 3.7% in 2026 and 3.7% in 2027.

Statbel. Price index and health index on base 2013 = 100; smoothed health index on base 2025 = 100 (the base for pivot indices since 2026). Year-on-year rise calculated by Indexo from the price indices.

These indices are updated every month, once Statbel (the Belgian statistical office) publishes them at the end of the month. The same health index is used to index rents.

Has your salary kept up with prices since 2015?

To keep the same purchasing power, a salary must have risen at least as much as prices. For each year, the table shows what €1,000 from that year is worth today, according to the health index. For example, the average health index for 2015 (101.45) and for September 2026 (140.67) give a price rise of 38.7%; since 2020 (110.00), it is 27.9%.

Frequently asked questions

When will the official January 2027 indexation percentage be known?

For JC 200, the calculation uses the smoothed health index for November and December 2026. Statbel publishes the December index at the end of the month; social secretariats announce the percentage in the following days. Until then, 4.32% is a forecast (Acerta, 29 September 2026).

Does my net pay rise as much as my gross pay?

No. The gross increase is subject to contributions and withholding tax (bedrijfsvoorheffing / précompte professionnel), and the work bonus may fall. At €3,000 gross, an indexation of 4.32% adds +€129.60 gross, but about +€30.95 net for a single white-collar worker.

What is cents indexation?

Since 1 June 2026, above €4,000 gross a month, the first 2 indexation points are calculated on €4,000 (€80 at most); the rest applies to the whole salary. Example: at €5,000 gross, an indexation of 4.32% gives +€196.00 instead of +€216.00.

What is the pivot index?

It is a threshold of the smoothed health index. When it is exceeded, social benefits and civil service salaries rise by 2%, three months later for federal civil servants, and a new pivot index is set 2% higher. The next one (102.29) would be exceeded in November 2026, according to the Planning Bureau.

Can my employer refuse indexation?

No. The indexation provided for by your sector’s agreement is compulsory. If your payslip does not show it, check your payslip and contact your employer, your trade union or the labour inspectorate (FPS Employment).
