Combining an activity with your pension in 2026: what is allowed?

Updated on

Your case: pension and an activity

From 1 January of the year you turn 66, or with 45 years of career when your pension starts, you can combine without limit. Before that, your earned income for the year is limited, in 2026, to €10,432 gross as an employee and €8,346 net as a self-employed person (€15,648 and €12,519 with a dependent child). Above that, the pension is reduced by the percentage by which you exceed the limit.

Flexi-jobs, associative work, the sharing economy and a mandate started after retirement count towards these limits; volunteering and declared artistic creation do not. The statutory age is 66 for people born from 1960 to 1963. Amounts published in the Belgian Official Gazette for 2026 (notice reproduced by Partena Professional), reread on 8 October 2026. For guidance only, not legal advice.

66 yearsstatutory age in 2026: unlimited combination from 1 January of that year
€10,432gross a year: limit for employed work before the statutory age, with no dependent child
€8,121a year: separate limit for flexi-income with an early retirement pension

Activity by activity: allowed, and does it count towards the limit?

Three situations: a retirement pension before the statutory age (without 45 years of career), a retirement pension at the statutory age or after 45 years of career, and a survivor’s pension alone. If you receive both a retirement pension and a survivor’s pension, the retirement pension limits apply.

The 2026 income limits

The income taken into account is that of the calendar year: gross for employed work or a mandate, net for a self-employed activity. The limits are indexed every year. What your salary brings in net, and the final tax with your pension: working pensioner.

If you exceed the limit

The pension is not withdrawn from the first euro over: it is reduced by the percentage by which you exceed the limit. Exceeding it by 20% reduces the pension by 20%. If you exceed it by 100% or more, it is suspended for the whole calendar year. For flexi-jobs, the separate limit comes on top of the general limit: the Federal Pension Service does not publish how the reduction is calculated when only that limit is exceeded.

At the statutory age or with 45 years of career

No limit at all: you can work as much as you like, with no effect on the pension. Just one point to watch: the employer deducts withholding tax (bedrijfsvoorheffing / précompte professionnel) on your salary alone, without taking your pension into account. From 2027 income, the Act of 15 July 2026 provides for separate taxation of 33% on the employed work of pensioners who have reached the statutory age or had a full career when they retired.

A job as an employee

Allowed

  • Unlimited combination from 1 January of the year you turn 66 (statutory age in 2026), or with 45 years of career when your pension starts.
  • The employer’s withholding tax ignores your pension: having tax to pay the following year is common.

Ceilings and limits

  • Statutory retirement age for people born from 1960 to 1963: unlimited combination from 1 January of that year: 66 years (statutory age (born 1960 to 1963))

Steps

Effect

No effect on the pension. From 2027 income, separate taxation of 33% is planned for this salary, if you have reached the statutory age or had a full career (Act of 15 July 2026).

Frequently asked questions

Can a pensioner do a flexi-job?

Yes, without the four-fifths condition. The flexi-wage carries no contributions or tax, with no tax ceiling for a pensioner. Before the statutory age, flexi-income counts towards the general limit and also has its own separate limit: €8,121 a year in 2026.

Does volunteering count towards the limit?

No, as long as the allowances stay within the tax-free volunteering ceilings (€44.02 a day, €1,760.83 a year, 2026 income). There are generally no formalities, unless you receive the income guarantee for older people (GRAPA/IGO) or a public-sector guaranteed minimum supplement.

Do you have to declare your activity to the Federal Pension Service?

Before the statutory age, yes: within 30 days of starting the activity or of the pension decision, then at each change, using the ‘Déclaration relative à l’activité professionnelle’ (declaration of professional activity). At the statutory age, there is generally nothing to declare.

What happens if I go over the limit?

Your pension is reduced by the percentage by which you exceed the limit: 10% over the limit means 10% less pension. If you exceed it by 100% or more, the pension is suspended for the whole calendar year.
