What are advance tax payments?
Updated on
Advance tax payments are tax prepayments that self-employed people and company directors make themselves during the year, since no withholding tax is deducted by an employer. In 2026: 10 April, 10 July, 12 October, 21 December (deadlines for advance tax payments on 2026 income (VA1 to VA4)). In Dutch: voorafbetalingen.
Definition of advance tax payments
They are paid in four instalments (April, July, October, December); for 2026 income, a fifth period opens for self-employed people trading in their own name, from 21 December 2026 to 20 February 2027. The earlier the payment, the higher the tax bonus.
Since the reform, self-employed people trading in their own name no longer face a tax increase if they make no advance payments; company directors still do.
