Working days and public holidays 2026: calculate a deadline in Belgium

Updated on

Calculate a deadline or count days

Belgium has 10 statutory public holidays. In 2026, 8 fall on a weekday, because Assumption Day (Saturday 15 August) and All Saints’ Day (Sunday 1 November) fall at a weekend: the year has 253 working days from Monday to Friday, compared with 254 in 2027. A deadline that ends on a Saturday, a Sunday or a public holiday is moved to the next working day.

Example: 10 working days from Friday 1 May 2026 take you to Monday 18 May 2026, as Ascension Day on 14 May does not count. Calendar checked on 8 October 2026.

The ten statutory public holidays (Act of 4 January 1974, FPS Employment). Easter: 5 April 2026 and 28 March 2027; Ascension Day falls 39 days after Easter, Whit Monday 50 days after.

In 2027, Labour Day (Saturday 1 May), Assumption Day (Sunday 15 August) and Christmas Day (Saturday 25 December) fall at a weekend. The Communities’ holidays (11 July, 27 September, 15 November) are not statutory public holidays. A public holiday that falls on a Sunday, or on a usual non-working day, is replaced by another day in the business.

Calendar days, working days or banking days?

  • Calendar days: every day counts. If the last day falls on a Saturday, a Sunday or a public holiday, the deadline moves to the next working day. Example: 30 days after 8 October 2026 falls on Saturday 7 November, so the deadline is Monday 9 November 2026.
  • Working days: since 1 January 2023, these have in principle been all days except Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. In employment law and social security, Saturday remains a working day.
  • Banking days: in addition to weekends, the European TARGET payment system closes six days a year: 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, 25 and 26 December. In 2026, Good Friday fell on 3 April. Belgian banks were also closed on Friday 15 May 2026.

The period runs from the day after the act or event that triggers it, and the last day is included: that is the rule in the Code of Companies and Associations (Article 1:32), the same as in the Judicial Code.
