What is the health index?
Updated on
The health index is the consumer price index without alcohol, tobacco and motor fuels: it is the one used to index wages, benefits and rents. In 2026: 140.67 (latest published health index, September 2026 (base 2013 = 100)). In Dutch: gezondheidsindex.
Definition of the health index
Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, publishes it every month. For wages and benefits, the smoothed health index is mainly used: the average of the last four months.
For rent, the formula compares the health index for the month before the lease’s anniversary date with the one for the month before it was signed.

Worked example
A lease signed in September 2025 for a rent of €900: starting index for August 2025, 135.64; on the anniversary in September 2026, index for August 2026, 140.30. The indexed rent can rise to 900 × 140.30 ÷ 135.64 = €930.92.
In Dutch: gezondheidsindex
In Dutch-language communications from your sector or social secretariat, the health index is called ‘gezondheidsindex’ (‘indice santé’ in French ones). The smoothed health index, the average of the last four months, is a different index: ‘afgevlakte gezondheidsindex’ (‘indice santé lissé’). In English: health index.

- Consumer price index: the general index, which measures inflation, also includes alcohol, tobacco and motor fuels.
- Pivot index: a threshold of the smoothed health index: when it is exceeded, social benefits and public sector salaries rise by 2%, and a new threshold is set 2% higher.
