What is wage indexation?

Updated on

Indexation is the automatic adjustment of wages and benefits to rising prices, measured by the health index. In 2026: 2.21% (wage indexation in JC 200 on 1 January 2026). In Dutch: indexering.

Definition of wage indexation

In Belgium, most wages follow the health index, but each joint committee has its own mechanism: some index once a year (JC 200 in January), others every quarter or as soon as a pivot index is exceeded. Social benefits and public sector salaries rise by 2% after the pivot index is exceeded.

Since 1 June 2026, the first two indexation points for salaries above €4,000 gross apply only to the first €4,000: this is cents indexation.

Worked example

A white-collar worker in JC 200 on €3,000 gross: the 2.21% indexation in January 2026 took their gross pay to €3,066.30 and their net pay from €2,261.33 to €2,277.16, i.e. €15.83 more a month. If the 4.32% forecast for January 2027 is confirmed, €3,000 gross will become €3,129.60, for €30.95 more net pay.

In Dutch: indexering

In Dutch-language communications from your sector or social secretariat, wage indexation is called ‘indexering’; in French-language ones, ‘indexation des salaires’. On Indexo’s English pages: wage indexation.

Not to be confused with…

  • Health index: the consumer price index without alcohol, tobacco and motor fuels: it is the one used to index wages, benefits and rents.
  • Pay scale increase: a rise linked to seniority or a new job comes on top of indexation: it is not the same thing.
