What is a holiday fund?

Updated on

A holiday fund is the body that pays blue-collar workers’ holiday pay instead of the employer: the ONVA/RJV or a sector fund. In 2026: 15.38% (holiday pay paid by the fund: share of the previous year’s gross pay, grossed up to 108%). In Dutch: vakantiekas.

Definition of a holiday fund

A blue-collar worker’s employer does not pay the holiday pay itself: it pays special contributions that fund the holiday fund. The fund then pays the holiday pay, usually between 2 May and 30 June. That is why a blue-collar worker’s contributions are calculated on 108% of gross pay.

Salaried artists follow the same logic: their holiday pay is also managed by a fund.

Worked example

For a blue-collar worker paid €3,000 gross a month, the employer pays €2,165.62 in quarterly contributions and €3,992.98 in annual holiday contribution. The following year, the fund pays the worker €5,979.74 gross in holiday pay, i.e. €4,280.02 net.

In Dutch: vakantiekas

On a Dutch-language payslip or statement, the holiday fund is called ‘vakantiekas’ or ‘Rijksdienst voor Jaarlijkse Vakantie (RJV)’; on a French-language one, ‘caisse de vacances’ or ‘Office national des vacances annuelles (ONVA)’.

Dutch term taken from: CSC/ACV (secondary source), National Social Security Office (NSSO).

Not to be confused with…

  • NSSO: the NSSO collects social security contributions from employees and employers, then distributes them among the branches of social security.
  • Holiday pay: the pay for your holidays: single holiday pay covers your days off, double holiday pay is an extra payment usually made in May or June.

Calculate it for your situation
