Parental leave 2026: how much do you get from the NEO?

Updated on

Calculate your net pay during parental leave

During parental leave, the National Employment Office (NEO) pays a flat-rate allowance: €1,058.86 gross a month full-time, €529.42 half-time and €179.60 on a one-fifth reduction (basic amounts as of 1 March 2026, indexed by 2% in September 2026). It does not depend on your salary.

On a one-fifth reduction, a single white-collar worker on €3,000 gross receives €2,101.39 net a month, salary and allowance included, instead of €2,261.33. Full-time, they receive only the allowance: about €970.63 net.

2026 amounts and durations

Each parent is entitled to 4 months of parental leave per child, to be taken before the child turns 12. They can convert them into 8 months half-time, 20 months on a one-fifth reduction or, with the employer’s agreement, 40 months on a one-tenth reduction, and combine the options.

Basic monthly allowance (worker not living alone). September 2026: Indexo estimate, + 2% indexation. Withholding tax is deducted by the NEO: 10.13% for a full break, 17.15% for reduced working time.

NEO amounts as of 1 March 2026, then indexed by 2% in September 2026: the exact September amounts are to be confirmed on the NEO website.

A single parent, living alone with their child, receives a higher amount. Its 2026 amount is not yet included here: your payment body or the NEO will confirm it.

Single white-collar worker, no dependent children. Monthly net: part-time salary (Indexo engine calculation, parameters as of 1 October 2026) and estimated net allowance.

On a one-fifth reduction, the loss is small: salary falls by 20%, but withholding tax falls faster, and the allowance makes up part of the difference. Compare with simply switching to four-fifths.

Conditions and steps

  • Seniority: 12 months with your employer in the last 15 months.
  • Child’s age: the leave must start before the child turns 12 (21 for a child with a disability).
  • Inform your employer in writing, 2 to 3 months before the leave starts.
  • Apply for the allowance from the NEO, online or with the application form completed with your employer.
  • Protection against dismissal during the leave and for up to 3 months after.
  • The right is personal: you cannot transfer it to the other parent.

Parental leave is in principle an assimilated period (treated as worked) for the pension, on the basis of a normal notional salary.

Frequently asked questions

How much do you get on full-time parental leave?

€1,058.86 gross a month as of 1 March 2026, i.e. €951.60 net after the NEO’s withholding tax, basic amount. With the September 2026 indexation, expect about €970.63 net.

Is one-fifth parental leave worthwhile?

Yes, for net pay: on €3,000 gross, you keep 92.9% of your usual net pay for 80% of the working time. You can take it for 20 months.

Up to what age of the child?

The leave must start before the child turns 12, or 21 if the child has a disability. Each parent has their own 4 months, for each child.

Does the allowance depend on my salary?

No: it is a flat rate. Only a single parent receives a higher amount. This is why full-time parental leave costs more in net terms on high salaries.
